SEASON OUTLOOK

Coach Helms returns for his 5th season back in the driver’s seat of the Wrangler’s Basketball program after a nine-year hiatus that took him to Meridian Community College in Mississippi and Butler Community College in Kansas.  In 14 seasons at Odessa College, Coach Helms has a record of 355-100, including 4 National Tournament appearances. His overall career record now stands at 653-255 in 28 years as a junior college head coach.

Your 2009-2010 Wranglers have been recruited from near and far!  With the addition of a very talented group of eight newcomers to the program, the returners will look to provide the leadership and stability that is needed to finish at the top of the always tough WJCAC.

Coach Helms feels confident in this team to uphold the winning tradition of Odessa College.  Helms will look to guide this talented team through the strenuous tests that the WJCAC season will provide.  Coach Helms expects to have competition for every position on the court.

SOPHOMORES
# 2 MELVIN BAKER 6’7 FORWARD Amarillo, TX
After a freshman campaign that saw Melvin miss significant time due to injury, look for Melvin to provide consistent scoring and rebounding for the Wranglers.  Melvin was a standout for Texas high school basketball powerhouse Amarillo Palo Duro High School.  Melvin is a long skilled player who has a knack for putting the ball in the basket. Signed with Middle Tennessee State University

#23 JOSH BROWN 6’4 GUARD Ruston, LA
Josh made great strides throughout his freshman season.  Josh was the second leading scorer for the Wranglers down the conference stretch run.  Josh will be expected to provide offense punch to the Wrangler offense this season.  Josh is a very long, athletic, active player, who just flat out makes plays. Signed with Louisiana Tech University

#12 DESMOND WOODBERRY 6’2 GUARD Midland, TX
Desmond contributed to last year’s squad by providing much needed help at both point guard and shooting guard.  Desmond should have more opportunities this year as a scorer. Desmond is a very strong guard with great leadership and finishing abilities that the Wranglers are excited to have.

# 33 RASHAD SAVAGE 6’6 FORWARD Philadelphia, PA
Rashad was a solid interior presence for the Wranglers last season.  Rashad really came on strong toward the end of last season by averaging slightly more than 10 points and 10 rebounds the last 4 games of the season.  Toughness around the basket will be Rashad’s calling card.

#4 SCOTTIE FARRINGTON 6’9 FORWARD Nassau, Bahamas
Scottie Farrington comes to Odessa College from Rogers State University, Claremore, OK.  NAIA powerhouse Rogers State was ranked No. 1 in the nation the final seven weeks of the regular season.  Scottie saw action in 28 games and averaged 3.5 rebounds per game.  Scottie has the potential to develop into a shot-blocking standout. Signed with Louisiana Tech University

FRESHMEN
#1 ANTHONY HUBBARD 6’4 GUARD Woodbridge, VA
Anthony Hubbard will be counted on to provide the Wranglers with a calm and steady hand at the point guard position.  At 6’4”, 220lbs, Anthony does not have the prototypical point guard frame.  But don’t be fooled by his large frame, Anthony is a legitimate playmaker.

#11 THOMAS SCHOEPS 6’1 GUARD Berlin, Germany
Thomas Schoeps is expected to provide quality depth at both guard positions this season for the Wranglers.  Thomas is a solid ball handler, who is prepared to be the floor leader for the Wranglers.  Thomas is also a deadly 3point shooter.  He shot an incredible 60% from beyond the 3point line at the European Championships.  Thomas averaged 17 ppg in high school.

#21 SCOTTY NORWOOD 6’1 GUARD El Paso, TX
Scotty Norwood comes to Odessa College after leading El Paso Montwood to a district championship.  Scotty averaged 9 points per game and 4 rebounds per game his senior year at Montwood.  Scotty was named 1st Team All-District, as well as 2nd Team All-City.  Scotty helped lead the Montwood Rams to an impressive 29-4 overall record.

#25 ERIQ HARRIS 6’6 FORWARD Chicago, IL
Eriq Harris comes to Odessa College after a stellar high school career at John Marshall High School in Chicago, Illinois.  Eriq averaged an impressive 22 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocked shots per game at John Marshall High.  Eriq is an explosive player, who has tons of “upside”.  Eriq was named to the All-Conference, All-City, and All-State teams respectively.

#30 KEVIN SCHAFFARTZIK 6’2 GUARD San Diego, CA
Kevin Schaffartzik has made the long journey from John F. Kennedy School in Berlin, Germany to Odessa College.  Kevin averaged 13 point per game in high school.  Kevin was a member of the German Junior National Team in 2006 & 2008.  Expect for Kevin to be one of the top 3point shooters in the WJCAC this season.

#32 DARRICK BROWN 6’4 GUARD Orlando, FL
Darrick Brown should provide quality depth and a solid scoring punch to the Wranglers offense. Darrick prepped at University High School in Orlando, Florida.  At University High, Darrick averaged over 22 points per game.  Derrick also averaged over 6 rebounds per game at University High.  Darrick was named his team’s MVP his senior season.

#44 KADEEM COLEBY 6’10 FORWARD Nassau, Bahamas
Kadeem Coleby will be counted on to provide the Wranglers with a physical presence around the basket.  At 6’10”, Kadeem’s ability to block shots and run the floor should make an immediate impact for the Wranglers.  Kadeem is an athletic big man who will attack the rim and is willing to rebound on both ends of the floor.
