The Odessa College Cross Country team ran in the ASU Blue & Gold Classic
yesterday afternoon. The men were led by freshmen Stephen Barraza, a Midland
High product. Barraza finished 16th overall. Sophomore and former
Permian standout Gabriel Gordy finished 20th overall. The men finished
3rd in the team standings behind South Plains College and host Angelo State University. The
women were once again led by freshmen LaKeisha Johnson. Johnson finished
11th overall and just missed a third top ten finish by a few seconds. Both
teams will compete in the WJCAC/Region V championship on October 31st in Roswell,
NM.

The Odessa College cross country team participated
in the Crossroads Half Marathon and 5K this past
Saturday. Stephen Barraza and Gabriel Gordy
were top 5 in the Half Marathon. Roy Ramos
was 1st place overall in the 5k. OC placed
5 male runners in the top 10. Lakeisha Johnson
was 1st overall female in the 5k. Nancy Paramo
and Samantha Munoz were 2nd and 3rd in the 5k as
well. The cross country team will be back
in action October 13th at Angelo State University.

The Odessa College cross country teams faced their
toughest competition of the year at the Texas
Tech Open held on Friday September 18th. The
men’s field included Texas Tech, Eastern
New Mexico, Lubbock Christian, West Texas A&M,
and several other 4-year schools. The men
were led by freshman Stephen Barraza. Barraza
ran a personal best 29:45. The women’s
field was equally impressive. The field
was led by nationally ranked (#9) Texas Tech. Lakeisha
Johnson led the way for the Lady Wranglers with
a season best 21:22. Johnson finished 33rd
overall out of a field of 103 runners

The Odessa College cross country teams have competed
in three meets so far this season. The
women and men have competed in races hosted
by UTPB, Western Texas College, and New Mexico
Junior College. The men began the season
with a 4th place showing at UTPB. The
Wranglers have continued to work hard and have
finished 3rd in their last two meets. Newcomer
Stephen Barraza and Sophomore A.J. Lozano are
leading the way for this year’s squad. Former
Permian standout LaKeisha Johnson has led the
way for the women. LaKeisha won the
District 2-5A cross country championship last
year and has been OC’s top finisher at
each meet this season. LaKeisha is expected
to challenge for All-Region honors.
The upcoming schedule includes a race hosted by Texas
Tech on September 18th and the Crossroads half marathon
on October 3rd. The Region V championship meet
is scheduled for October 31st in Roswell, NM. |
