Virginia Brown brought more than just knowledge to Odessa
College; she brought 10 national championships to the Junior
College in West Texas. Virginia started her tennis-coaching
career at Odessa College and would end up coaching there
for 16 years. During those 16 years, Virginia won 10 national
championships and was national runner-up 6 times. Also
while she was coaching Odessa College, she found time to
coach the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. While
at UTPB, Virginia had the team rated as high as fifth in
the nation at one point. During the off-season for the
college tennis teams, Virginia found time to coach professionally
also. She coached on the professional circuit for seven
years and also coached world team tennis for nine years.
Virginia coached one of her own college athletes in the
pro circuit, Sandy Collins, and helped her to a ranking
as high as 17th in the world in both singles and doubles.
Virginia has been inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of
Fame and is a past winner of the Texas Sports Writers Association
Coach of the Year Award. She was the first woman to win
the award and at the time was the only woman to ever be
nominated for the honor. Virginia has also been NAIA Coach
of the Year, and served as president of the National Junior
College Tennis Association.
