Odessa College women's basketball coach Ara Baten felt that the Lady Wranglers started slow in their season opener against Colorado Northwestern Community College.

It didn't take long, however, for the Lady Wranglers to get up to speed.

Racing out to a massive lead after one quarter, Odessa College ran away from the Spartans, 101-26, during the first day of competition of the Wrangler Club Classic Thursday at the OC Sports Center.

The Lady Wranglers (1-0) had six players in double figures, led by Okako Adika's game-high 16 points.

Alasia Spivey had 14, Kamryn Lemon added 13, Arielle Adams and Maria Guimaraes each finished with 12 and Dyana Offutt chipped in with 10 in the victory.

"There was more good than bad," Baten said. "We've got some things we've got to clean up, some things we've got to do better.

"But we did an awful lot of things well, so overall, it was a good first game."

This was the first of three games in three days for the Lady Wranglers to open the season, something that Baten is looking forward to.

Not just for the competition on the court, but the things that go on around the program as well.

"First game of the year, you are going through everything for the first time," Baten said. "Getting through warmups properly and being where you are supposed to be and then back to the locker room at the right time and we worked on all of that tonight."

Another benefit for the Lady Wranglers in their runaway victory was the opportunity to play everyone on the roster.

With nine new faces, Baten was happy to clear the bench time and again during the game. That helped the Lady Wranglers apply continuous pressure to the Spartans throughout the game.

Odessa College faces Mesa Community College at 6 p.m. Friday in its second game of the weekend, with a 4 p.m. tipoff Saturday against Tohono O'odham Community College to conclude the tournament.

"This is November and it's what happens. You play a lot of games in a short period of time and you find a way through; you find out about your kids' toughness.

"But it was a good start."
