Bio

Affectionately known as "Coach Q" to his peers and colleagues, Bedell was named head women’s basketball coach at Odessa College in July of 2020. He becomes the seventh head coach in the school's 43-year history.

With 230 career wins as a head coach, Dr. Franqua “Coach Q” Bedell enters his fifth season at the helm of the Odessa College Women’s Basketball program, continuing to elevate a tradition-rich team with a legacy of excellence. Since his appointment on July 16, 2020, Bedell has become only the seventh head coach in the program’s 43-year history and has already guided the Lady Wranglers to historic milestones.

In his third season, Coach Q led Odessa College to a commanding 30-5 overall record and a 13-1 mark in WJCAC play, culminating in an appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament Elite Eight. That same season, the Lady Wranglers reached the Region V Championship and earned a sweep of conference honors: Ivana Krajina was named WJCAC Player of the Year, Sarengbe Sanogo earned WJCAC Co-Newcomer of the Year, and Chelsy Bautista was honored as WJCAC Defensive Player of the Year. All three were named to the 2024 Region V All-Tournament Team, with Krajina and Sanogo becoming the program’s first NJCAA All-Americans since 2020. For his leadership, Bedell was named WJCAC Coach of the Year and Texas Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year.

Continuing that momentum, the 2023–2024 campaign saw Odessa post a 19-9 overall record and a 10-4 conference mark, earning a top-two WJCAC finish for the second consecutive year and securing back-to-back trips to the Region V Tournament.

Before arriving in Odessa, Bedell made national headlines at Tallahassee Community College, where he led the Eagles to their first-ever NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship in 2018. In his six seasons at TCC, Bedell amassed a 124-62 record, led multiple national tournament  runs, and was named National Coach of the Year. His teams were known for their defensive tenacity, resilience, and championship mentality.

Coach Q’s career spans all levels of collegiate basketball, including assistant and associate roles at Missouri State University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Mississippi State University, and Southeast Missouri State University. As a relentless recruiter and player development expert, Bedell has coached numerous NJCAA and WBCA All-Americans, as well as three WNBA draft picks.

A Fort Smith, Arkansas native, Bedell earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of the Ozarks and a master’s in Sport and Recreation Management from Hardin-Simmons University. He later completed his Doctorate in Business Administration from California Intercontinental University. In addition, he is a certified Mental Performance Mastery Coach and a John C. Maxwell Leadership Trainer.

Beyond the sidelines, Coach Q is a published author, transformational speaker, and leadership strategist. His work in student development, athletic administration, and community engagement underscores his commitment to excellence both on and off the court.

Coach Q is married to Crystal Ness, and they have a son, Amir Bedell.
